Although this carpool story is still fictional, we have the technologies for Carpool 2.0 scenario to become reality, as soon as 2009. The GPS directional system, cell phone positioning, registration with a secured network that provides background check, convenient transfer of small payments, real time text messaging, transmission of photos to cell phone, a network link between cell phones to car GPS; these are feasible.
Implementation utilizes existing highways, uses common electronics, efficiently deploys cars and taps into seemingly endless stream of drivers. Drivers who enjoy company. Drivers needing extra dollars. Environmentally conscious drivers wanting to minimize their “carbon foot-print” or to reduce petroleum import. Parents who need safe drivers for their children. A Carpool 2.0 network offers one extra option for those willing to participate and also benefit those who do not participate. Let’s organize a high tech, 21st century option by pooling together our isolated capabilities. |
